Hearts of Wulin

Created by The Gauntlet Gaming Community

A tabletop roleplaying game of Wuxia melodrama, Powered by the Apocalypse. In Hearts of Wulin, players take the role of skilled martial artists in a world of rival clans, conspiracies, and obligations. The game emulates films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Chinese wuxia TV series like The Smiling Proud Wanderer and Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain, and Chinese martial arts novels from the second half of the twentieth century. In these tales, romance is as dangerous as a blade. Everyone has ties to factions, loves they can’t quite express, and secrets which will shake them to their core. As in the source material, stories in Hearts of Wulin are driven by the characters’ duties, romantic desires, and entanglements with other characters. Hearts of Wulin is Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA), meaning its mechanics are inspired, in part, by Apocalypse World by Vincent and Meguey Baker. The game is strongly influenced by several recent PbtA games, including Monsterhearts 2 by Avery Alder, Masks by Brendan Conway, and The Veil by Fraser Simons. That said, Hearts of Wulin stands on its own, and has several distinct features that help players tell stories steeped in wuxia melodrama.

Hearts of Wulin will be at Gauntlet Con 2019!
over 4 years ago – Wed, Oct 23, 2019 at 10:47:28 AM

We'll do a regular update for October later this month, but we wanted to let you know that Gauntlet Con 2019 is October 24-27. Gauntlet Con is an online convention featuring panels, contests, and nearly 200 game sessions. Several sessions of Hearts of Wulin are being offered this year, in addition to many other games that will likely be of interest to you.

If you don't have a lot of experience playing TTRPGs online, and think that this convention may not be for you as a result, let us put your mind at ease: Gauntlet Con is organized by many of the same people who manage Gauntlet Hangouts, an online gaming calendar that has nearly 2000 sessions per year, with over 400 unique participants. This team knows how to make online play accessible, and Gauntlet Con in particular is set up with newcomers in mind. For example, during the Con, there is a vibrant Discord server where volunteers can help you manage the technology and get to your games on time.

To learn more about Gauntlet Con 2019 and to register, please head to the site linked below. Registration is free for Gauntlet Patrons and $10 for everyone else. There are also options available for volunteers, folks facing financial hardship, and more.

We hope to see you there!

Update for July 2019
almost 5 years ago – Thu, Jul 25, 2019 at 07:50:11 AM

Hey folks!

A quick update just to let you know what the Hearts of Wulin team is working on at the moment.

Right now, we are working on getting the nearly-complete ruleset locked down. We are making a few changes based on some of the feedback we have gotten and will be putting out a version of the Playtest Packet that is nearly final (we'll do a few more rounds of playtesting of that version, as well as solicit feedback from the community on it).

We are also putting together guidelines for the stretch goal authors. There are particular things we want them to be mindful of in terms of how to structure Entanglements, Role Moves, and so forth.

That's all we've got for now. If you have been playing the current version of the Playtest Packet, we'd love to hear your feedback on it. You can find a feedback thread on The Gauntlet Forums:

As always, thanks for your support!
