Hearts of Wulin

Created by The Gauntlet Gaming Community

A tabletop roleplaying game of Wuxia melodrama, Powered by the Apocalypse. In Hearts of Wulin, players take the role of skilled martial artists in a world of rival clans, conspiracies, and obligations. The game emulates films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Chinese wuxia TV series like The Smiling Proud Wanderer and Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain, and Chinese martial arts novels from the second half of the twentieth century. In these tales, romance is as dangerous as a blade. Everyone has ties to factions, loves they can’t quite express, and secrets which will shake them to their core. As in the source material, stories in Hearts of Wulin are driven by the characters’ duties, romantic desires, and entanglements with other characters. Hearts of Wulin is Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA), meaning its mechanics are inspired, in part, by Apocalypse World by Vincent and Meguey Baker. The game is strongly influenced by several recent PbtA games, including Monsterhearts 2 by Avery Alder, Masks by Brendan Conway, and The Veil by Fraser Simons. That said, Hearts of Wulin stands on its own, and has several distinct features that help players tell stories steeped in wuxia melodrama.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Digital Stretch Goals Sent and All Physical Books Shipped
about 2 years ago – Sun, Feb 06, 2022 at 03:24:04 AM

The digital stretch goals (collectively called Hearts of Wulin: Worlds) have been sent out to backers via DriveThruRPG. We made some changes/additions to the digital stretch goals collection. Instead of the Trial of Many Venoms scenario, we added a brand-new playbook, The Villain, as well as Numberless Secrets, a way of adding mystery stories to Hearts of Wulin via the mystery mechanics in Brindlewood Bay.

All physical books have shipped, which means this will be the last regular update for this Kickstarter campaign. There may be a few little bonus things we'll be doing over the next few months, such as adding the new Villain playbook to the online character keeper and putting out some print 'n' play Name/Entanglement cards, but those are not things that necessarily require a future update.

If you can't find your DTRPG code for the digital stretch goals, please check the email you use for BackerKit (be sure to check spam). You may have to actually login to DTRPG using that email to find the download. Send us a message on Kickstarter if you can't find it.

If you haven't received your physical book in the next couple of weeks, please send us a message on Kickstarter and we'll get you sorted out.

Please follow along with everything we do on Twitter @GauntletRPG and our website www.gauntlet-rpg.com.

We hope you enjoy Hearts of Wulin!

U.S. books are shipping to backers!
about 2 years ago – Tue, Jan 25, 2022 at 11:41:59 PM

Just a quick update to let you know that books for U.S. backers started shipping today (To give you a sense of how effed the supply chain situation is right now, the books actually arrived in the port of Los Angeles December 9th, and it took another six weeks for them to get unloaded and put on a truck).

We are also nearly done with the digital stretch goals. We're just putting the finishing touches on the collection, which you should have in about a week or so.

As always, thanks so much for your support!

Books are arriving
over 2 years ago – Wed, Dec 01, 2021 at 08:49:06 PM

Hello!

Some quick updates. Books have started to arrive in international backers' mailboxes. U.S. Domestic books are still on a boat from Hong Kong. We are also sending out book plates for those of you who pledged for signed copies of the hardcover. Be on the lookout for those in the mail (it will be an envelope with a sticker inside).

The digital stretch goals are coming together. Artwork is starting to come in and we're getting the layout ready. Here are a couple of stretch goal art previews (both are by Minerva Fox):

Academy of the Blade
Fight Me IRL

As always, thanks so much for your support. We'll update you again as soon as the U.S. Domestic books start shipping!

We have books!
over 2 years ago – Tue, Oct 26, 2021 at 10:34:26 AM

We have books! And they look terrific! We have some pics for you below. Next up is the shipping container, which will get loaded on October 27th, at which point the U.S. Domestic books will begin their journey Stateside by boat. The international books are being sent separately to our fulfiller in China. They'll begin sending those out to international backers as soon as they have them.

We also wanted to give you an update on the signed hardcover situation. What we decided to do is have Lowell Francis, the designer of HoW, sign some bookplates, which we will then send to those backers. We have a picture of a signed bookplate below. We think they turned out pretty good!

Enjoy the pics, and, as always, thanks so much for your support!

Printing and shipping schedule
over 2 years ago – Tue, Sep 21, 2021 at 06:06:01 AM

Hi everyone.

We've had the normal back and forth with the printer to make sure the files are good to go for print. Everything is now sorted and we have our schedule for printing and shipping. Here it is:

Ok to print: Sept 08

F&Gs ex China: Sept 29

Ok to bind: Oct 06

(Factory is closed from Oct 01-07 due to China National Holiday)

Advances ex China: Oct 19

Ok to ship: Oct 22

RTS date: Oct 26

ETD HK: Nov 01

ETA Gerlach, NV89412: Dec 10  (This is based on normal shipment, a possible delay will be incurred due to the port congestion)

What the above means is that we should have the printed pages by September 29th and assuming they look ok, they'll start binding them in early October. Our international shipper is ready to go and should be shipping out the international backer books in November. Domestic backers will have to wait for the boat, and that's the major bottleneck affecting most U.S.-based businesses right now (to say nothing of the lack of long-haul truckers post-pandemic).

The one issue we're still deciding how to handle is the small number of backers who pledged to get a signed copy of the hardcover. We promised that reward in a world where we thought we'd be able to meet up at conventions and get the books signed. Given the state of things and to prevent further delays for those backers, we're probably going to just refund them the difference and not do the signed books. But we'll reach out to those folks separately.

As always, thanks for your support!
